I like to leave my mac os x machines on all the time to allow the repair
scripts to run. I some time use the Apple repair program or startup in
single user mode and use f-sic. Shareware programs like Cocktail work ok.
It also helps to defrag your drive a few times a year (contrary to Apple's
claims). If all else fails use Disk Warrior. Check your disk space. The
ten percent free space rule still applies. Good Luck.
