Just start up from the OSX Disk. Do a reinstall with archive in place and
then restart. Start from the disk again and do a repair file permissions.
It will take a few repairs to fix it. You don't have to do all of the hoop
jumping backup. OS x is stable. Make your normal backup from a repaired
file. I backup to a firewire hard drive. A DVD is too small to backup to
with a Mac.
