[Brmug-l] Leopard -- first complaint/impression

Hey Isaac,

Some of my feedback:

My 'update' install on my MacBook pro took about 45 minutes or so, it
initially told me 4 hours and it kept revising that down.

The dock is more useless now. It's visually useless. I hacked it so it
would look like one of the side docks so i can now at least SEE what
app is open at a glance. The grid/fan is useless to me. Maybe i just
don't get how it's supposed to work. The way they make the icons
appear from a folder is equally useless and visually confusing to me.
Like Isaac said, menus is gone from folders - people are clamoring a
bit to say Apple should have left that feature there WITH 'fan' and
'grid' as 'menus'.

New folder icons are useless, did i mention that? Now they're just
BLAH folders.

Several OLD chat apps no longer work properly - actually, they're all
old hotline chat apps that i still use with some old gamers. Maybe
they'd better start using jabber servers instead.

Photoshop 7.0.1 doesn't work anymore for me, although Dreamweaver 6.2
does. Adobe is going to have some issues with their software
considering they've been dragging their feet on converting/migrating
their code - but be warned that some of their software may be an
issue. Adobe has 6 page pdf explaining what works and what doesn't
(kind of) and what will need upgrading, etc. http://www.adobe.com/support/products/pdfs/leopardsupport.pdf

My *wonderful* Canon software (scanner) crashes after a scan now. I
had recently purchased a Canon 8800F scanner (white LED, fast!) and
compared to my Epsons the software "just worked". Now i'll have to
wait for the 'update' to fix that.

I can predictably crash iChat with screen sharing between my laptop
and my wife's iMac who has multiple (2) displays (at different
resolutions) when i'm switching between my screen and then back to hers.

Microsoft apps: still as they were. http://www.microsoft.com/mac/ if
you want to check on progress there i presume.

Response is both faster and slower on my MacBook Pro. Generally
response is much better on the interface - i can tell there must be
some caching going on when dealing with server connections - as one of
the problems i've had is it wouldn't 'disconnect' right away... or
even after 5-10-15minutes of me asking my laptop to disconnect to
fileshares at work... or even my local shared drive.

Reduced framerates on one of the graphically intense games i play by
25% or more. I suspect this has to do with 'spaces' but i haven't
tested with it off. I used to use a 3rd party for 'spaces' so i like
spaces as it is. It doesn't always predictably do what you expect
(i've had multiple chat windows for chat open in different spaces
instead of where i 'put' the chat application for example).

I've had applications running but not "show" anywhere on dock nor cmd-
tab. Truly hidden?! I had to choose the application again to 'find
it'. I dont' know if this is a finder issue or spaces issue... but
even the dock did not show it running (if you can tell with those
vague blue balls).

Hmm.... otherwise... i like it. Very little actually broke. I don't
know what Apple is thinking in terms of human interface guidelines
because they seem to be breaking them left and right in my mind with
some of their changes.

Time Machine -hmmm.... don't get me started. Nice ideas, i'll use it
(it's actually worth the external drives on my kids & wife's iMacs)
but i have issues with several aspects of this that i'll keep to
myself for the moment and see how they play out. Right now it's
useless for my laptop.

There are SOOO many good little things to find. In Safari, for
example, when you close a window (by accident, i've done so many
times) it now has a command to re-open the window you last closed. In
the Finder you can now control the 'grid' in the icon view.

So, i know i haven't explained some of what i wrote - i'll leave that
for BRMUG meetings and Isaac... but i did find one interesting review
(Ars Technica) by John Siracusa if you can get through it - i found it
interesting: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/1

Anyhow, overall - i like it - it is actually somewhat faster and more
responsive and... more stable (at least for me, and i did what
everyone says not to do: i did an 'update' instead of an archive and
install! I honestly think there are fewer issues going from 10.4 to
10.5 than there were 10.3 to 10.4.
